Timber in the City

New York City: a city full of people, culture, and experience. While the city doesn't sleep the people of the southeast side of Manhattan need a place to. This project focuses on the design issues at hand within major cities including that of micro housing units, versatility of space, and healthy building materials.

In order to create a building that was both economical and ecological we were challenged with creating a timber structure building that had to reach at least 70' at the highest point forcing us to design for shear, lateral, and torsion forces within the building.

Our building complex also needed to house an addition to the famous Essex Street Market and a new addition to the neighborhood, the Andy Warhol Art Museum.

While keeping all of this in mind we pursued modularity in the structure creating a grid that the four different types of units could utilize in a similar but unique fashion. Within these units we incorporated modular design in the bedrooms and bathrooms allowing us to maximize the minimal space allotted.

To cap the project off and truly create an eye catching capital to the building, we built an elevated roof path that mirrors the intentions of the "Highline" in Manhatttan with a twist specific to our structure: hanging gardens. This feature allows the residents to uproot from the classic city lifestyle and feel at one with mother nature on a beautiful roof including a view of downtown.
