Badlands Research Camp

For thousands of years the Badlands have formed through the process of deposition and erosion. Over time this has created a harsh and desolate terrain of both wonder and confustion for scientists and adventurers alike.

With climate change ever present in the Badlands we set out to design a low impact structure which would be able to support a research camp both from a scientific perspective while researching climate changes and living conditions.

Our research camp rests atop a series of elevated platforms which help to level the surface of the camp even though the terrain below undulates and changes with every step. This style of foundation allows for a low impact on the already fragile site while giving the scientists/inhabitants the ability to adjust the ever changing conditions of the landscape.

While keeping all of this in mind we pursued modularity in the structures themselves which allow for easy means of transporting and assembling the camp. Furthermore this allows for various arrangements of the buildings and cabins.

The buildings are separated by full time use situated at either end of the camp with three buildings being research hubs and one being the housing for full time or four season staff. The remaining cabins are organized into six microcommunities in whihc four single resident cabins are situated in an offset manor to create opportunities for natural light and private space.

Lastly the central promenade cuts down the central axis of the camp and is divided into smaller public spaces by use of shared kitchen and bathroom units.

Overall the camp is designed to investigate the change in climate and the beauty of the Badlands.
